Begonia tjiasmantoi was only described recently in 2020 and when its found it was already in a critically endangered status as the place it was found is a coffee plantation with high application of herbicide. Despite the toxic environment it was found, the species is quite delicate and difficult to grow. It is often and easily mistaken for B. ignita, another Sulawesi species.
